Bernie Dare (Vale)

SacredSights

It is with much sadness that we advise of the passing of the Footy Club’s great friend, Bernie Dare.

Bernie was the son of Des and Margaret Dare, and brother to Peter, Trish, Brian, Phil, Dave, Margie, Kate and Jane. The Dare family were a Sacred Heart institution in the 1960’s and 70’s.  All the boys attended SHC, and at one stage or another, all played for the SHOC Footy club.

Bernie’s list of achievements with the SHOC Footy club is a long one.

  • As player he played well over 100 games over an extended period and only stopped playing because of injury
  • He was one of the early coaches of the famed Death Squad, and was partly responsible for giving the team that name
  • He served with distinction on the committee, particularly the Social committee
  • He was the Bar Manager when the club had their clubrooms at West Beach.  He was chuffed at having the bar named “The Bernie Dare Bar” in his honour after many years of service
  • He was honoured with life membership of the SHOC Footy club in 1997
  • He was a long time sponsor of the Footy club back when sponsors were hard to find
  • He continued to support the Football Club even during the time when he was suffering with poor health

Bernie was a good man who loved the company of his friends and family, loved having a beer, loved to laugh out loud, loved the Norwood Footy Club, loved Bob Dylan, and above all else loved the SHOC Footy and Cricket clubs and the people who made those clubs the great places they are to be around.

Bernie passed away in the early hours this morning, 22/12/2015, surrounded by his close family, who had flown in from all around the world to be at his mum, Marg’s, 90th birthday celebrations the previous day.

He will be greatly missed.
